About MATAM IN ISLAM RIGHT OR WRONG Matm is a ritual done by Shia Muslims on 10th of Ashoora, in the grief of the Martyr Hussain رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ To show their grief they mourn and harm themselves by striking sword on their body or slapping their face and beating their chest. This action of their is unapproved from the Islamic Sources (The Quran & Sunnah) and it is considered as Haram and Bidah (Innovation). The Prophet did not do them, nor did any of his companions. None of his companions did them when he or anyone else died, although the loss of prophet Muhammad was greater than the death of Hussain رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ. Prophet ﷺ, strictly forbade harming oneself over the loss of someone dear to us and said: "He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, rends his garment, or cries with the cry of the Jaahiliyyah."
